Rural Life
Went went to our first rodeo last week. Jubi got wind of it (no joke intended) and had her heart set on it before we knew it. It was a big one in Arkansas with some top riders and bulls (I didn't know they had top bulls). Several thousand were in attendance. It made me think about the Roman circuses. We had the gladiators and the animals, we just needed a few chariots. After watching the calf roping I think I know where they get the term beef "jerky". When the calf gets to the end of the rope at going full speed the crowd reacts with a big "oohhh". To me the best part was the mutton busters (five-year-old kids "breaking" sheep). Jubi liked the bronc busters and the monkeys riding sheep dogs (like little cowboys). She brought her toy horse and her cowboy hat.
Then.....this week we went to the county fair complete with pie and quilt judging. Another first for this city boy. Jubi's cousins are in 4-H and had some goats to show. They took grand champion ribbons in several catagories. One of the judges said he would match their goats up with any in the state. So that's where they head next, to Springfield and then the State Fair. Last night we watch the greased pig scramble. It was especially fun to see all the little kids go at it. Usually the cousins come home with several of the squeelers. Though they got close several times, only Matthew (the littlest) caught one. Gina said that will feed them up to 6 months. Jubi was itching to get in there. She is more into livestock than I am. She would probably want to keep it in her room. Yee Haw....
